This volume has grown from a symposium. The idea of the city, held at the Architectural association, London, in celebration of the life of Alvin Boyarsky, Chairman of the AA School of Architecture from 1971 to 1990. The symposium was initiated by Alvin’s wife Elizabeth and was chaired by Dalibor Vesely and Charles Jencks, with talks by John Hejduk, Peter Eisenman, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, Bernard Tschumi, Leon van Schaik and Peter Cook, all of which are reproduced here.

Since that event additional papers and portfolios of work have been commissioned from a younger generation of AA graduates and staff with whom Alvin had a special rapport. Haha Hadid, Peter Wilson, Dalibor Vesely, Ben Nicholson, Nigel Coates, Raoul Bunschoten, and Chris Macdonald and Peter Salter. Alvin’s Chicago a la Carte, written while he was associate dean at the University of Illinois at Chicago and first published in AD, December 1970, is reprinted in full.
